Abstract

Polymers comprise (a) 80-100% acrylic esters of formula (where R1 and R2 are 1-3C alkyl; R3 is H or 1-3C alkyl; R1+R2+R3 together contain is not >5C atoms; n = 1-4; and X- is an acid gp.) and (b) 0-20% other aliphatic monomers contg. a vinyl gp., and have a K-value in aqs. soln. >=100, those with a K-value of 140-170 being esp. useful. They are prepared by exposing a thin film of a soln. of (a) and opt. (b) contg. the usual photoinitiators, on a flat surface, to energising radiation at room or opt. elevated temps. (a) are pref. the hydrochlorides of N:N-dimethyl- and N:N-diethyl amino-ethyl acrylate; N:N-dimethylamino- and N:N-diethyl amino-propyl acrylate are also suitable monomers. Co monomers (b) are e.g. acrylic acid methyl- and ethyl esters; vinyl isobutyl ether, etc.
