Abstract

A knitting machine has >=1 guide rod which is pref. pivoted at its lower end and whose free upper end is pointed and bent over towards the region where stitches are formed on an adjacent needle. The guide rod is reciprocated by pref. a rotating cam so that its upper end moves towards and away from the needle whereby successive stitches (pref. enlarged) of one wale are threaded onto the guide rod as the knitting web leaves the machine. Pref. the guide rod has an elongate slot through which a outlet wheel extends to cut the stitches threaded onto the guide rod. Where the knitting machine is a flat bar machine a guide rod is pref provided at each end of the needle bed. Alternatively the arrangement may be provided on a circular knitting machine used to produce a hose which is cut to form a flat web. The web is prevented from contracting laterally as it leaves the needle bed thereby preventing deformation of the stitches on the needle.
