Abstract

Fuel elements of 10-30 mm dia. balls of a mixt. of U or Pu oxide or carbide dispersed in a refractory matrix of metal or ceramic. Assemblies are pref. hexagonal, contg. a bed of fuel balls between covers of UO2 needles sheathed in special stainless material above and stainless steel below. Alternatively the top cover may be larger balls of active material. The temp. and strength limitations of previous needle type and the aerodynamic effects of other types are overcome. The assemblies are easily dismantled and refilled.
