Abstract
A uniform mixture of hydrophilic active catalyst material and hydrophobic polymer is hot pressed between thin layers of separator material into a thin plate electrode. The separator on the electrolyte side of the electrode is stripped off mechanically and the whole electrode is then dipped into a bath of etching soln. This not only removes the separator from the gas side of the electrode but also surface etches hydrophobe material from the electrolyte side to increase the relative proportion of catalyst and define a mesh structure. The graduation improves the effective three phase boundary distribution and hence efficiency of both oxidizing and reducing plates.
