Abstract

Element peaks in a chromatographic column are detected by an e.g. piezoelectric pressure detector (with minimal dead space), pref. sited between the column outlet and a capillary orifice, or alternatively at the column inlet, or at a point in the column. The detector may be absolute; or may be a differential detector, e.g. between two parallel columns, one of which is fed with solvent only. The column is fed at pressure controlled e.g. to plus-or-minus .1% or at controlled flow; and the measured pressure fluctuations are due to enhancement of carrier viscosity; the area of the peaks being proportional to log. relative viscosity so that mol. wt. or intrinsic viscosity of solute. may be measured. The detector is non-specific but sensitive, and is simple to construct and use.
