Abstract
1345101 Partial pressure measurement - determining dewpoint OMNIA (ENG) Ltd and N A CRUTCHLEY 21 Jan 1972 2888/72 Headings G1A G1S The partial water vapour pressure of a substance in a container 3 Fig.1, is determined by measuring the temperature of a thermo-electric Peltier-effect cooled dewpoint-sensing mirror 6 exposed to a jet of air in an enclosed air flow system which comprises a narrow bore tubular water vapour permeable membrane 2 immersed in container 3. The air is circulated by a pump 4, and the circuit includes a dryer 20 which may be by-passed by a valve 7. The deposit of water vapour on the mirror 6 is detected photoelectrically by lamp 12 and photo-cell 13 through light guides 10, 11. The system includes a second cell 17 providing a radiation reference, and the temperature of the mirror is maintained at the dewpoint by the photo-cell output. A thermister 21 indicates the temperature and thus the partial pressure. A second embodiment, Fig.2 (not shown), includes a pair of Peltier cooled mirrors together with their sensing systems and the partial pressures are measured before and after passing through the membrane. Chamber 3 may be a flow pipe in a process and the output may indicate the moisture content. The membrane may be in the form of a coiled micro-bore tube or panels of membrane material having an air space between them and bounded at their sides by metal.
