Abstract

Syringe is intended notably for the intravenous injection of tracers, generally radioactive, for the exploration of highly vascular organs, such as the brain or kidneys. The tracer is introduced into the vein of an arm in a soln. of small vol. To ensure that the labelled prod. penetrates rapidly and without too much dispersion into the general circulation, the operator "pushes" the first injection by larger vol of a physiological serum cond. in a second syringe. the new syringe contains a piston with an external extension rod; an intermediate piston also slides in the body. It consists of two rubber rings with a thin rubber diaphragm having a cruciform opening; the lips of this opening act as a normally closed valve. The double injection is effected by a single movement without the two solns. becoming mixed; there is no dead time involed in handling a second syringe or in operating a three-way tap. Injection is effected by pushing the piston extension rod; the tracer soln. compartment is emptied first and the serum follows.
