Abstract
1417529 Injection site for conduits BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc 4 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 00344/74 Heading F2P A conduit for conveying blood and like fluids comprises a tube 10 puncturable by a hypodermic needle; a first elastomeric sleeve 14 surrounding a portion of the tube, the sleeve being also puncturable by a hypodermic needle; a second elastic sleeve 16 surrounding and compressing the first sleeve, the second sleeve having an inner diameter when unstretched which is less than the outer diameter of the first sleeve. The sleeve 16 may be longer than sleeve 14 which it overlies and have an unstretched inner diameter less than the outer diameter of tube 10, the overlying portions 18, 20 providing a seal against any fluid leakage that may take place along the interface 22 between tube 10 and sleeve 14 after puncture by an hypodermic needle 24. Sleeve 16 preferably has a wall thickness which is half the wall thickness of sleeve 14 to allow it to fit closely about the ends of sleeve 14. The dimensions of the tube and sleeves are chosen to give sufficient compression to prevent leakage through the walls after puncture by a hypodermic needle. In one suitable form tubing 10 has an inner diameter of 0À18 to 0À2 inch and wall thickness 0À06 to 0À07 inch; sleeve 14 has an inner diameter when unstretched of 0À2 to 0À3 inch and wall thickness of 0À09 to 0À1 inch and sleeve 16 has an unstretched inner diameter of 0À25 inch and a wall thickness of 0À03 inch. Tubing 10 may be made of a biologically compatible material for example a vinyl plastisol, a polyurethane or a silicone rubber and the sleeves may be made of natural latex or any other material having good needle puncture resealing characteristics.
