Abstract

Process comprises (a) removing most of the sludge formed in tanks holding 28% P2O5 acid, by decantation, but leaving sufficient crystal nuclei in the acid to ensure self-cleaning of the concn. circuit and to prevent desaturation of the acid. after concn. and (b) desaturating the conc (54% P2O5) acid by forced cooling and vacuum filtration, eliminating solids, and recovering, in a storage tank final traces of solids formed subsequently. Acid produced by any process is purified to 0.5% suspended solids with almost 100% recovery of P2O5 values. Recovered solids may be disposed of without recycling; expensive rotating driers and decantors are not required.
