Abstract

A process and apparatus for recovering Br2 from organic residues in which the fluid residue is evaporated and the resulting vapours mixed with O2(-cont) gas and fed into a combustion zone pre-heated to >900 degrees C. The Br2 in the gas emerging from this zone is isolated by condensation or absorption. Esp. to treat, on a large-scale operation, the Br2-contg. residues from industrial processes; production of Br-cpds. by addition substitution always results in side reactions and unusable Br2-contg. by-prods. Economic treatment of waste products, which are highly toxic and would contaminate the environment if discharged, by an efficient process (distillation leaves large quantities of Br2-contg. cpds. in the residue) which recovers elemental Br2.
