Abstract

Oxidisable contaminants are removed from waste gas streams which are free from heavy metals and S cpds. by (a) choosing a non-selective oxidn. catalyst for the oxidisable contaminants at a temp. which is sufficient to support catalytic oxidn., (b) treating the waste gas with the non-selective oxidn. catalyst for sufficient time to yield complete oxidn., (c) recovering any surplus heat from gas after oxidn., and (d) releasing the gas. The process is used to prevent atmos. pollution by industrial gases, e.g. from metal cleaning, painting, dry-cleaning, chlorinated solvent prodn., esp. from 1-10C aliphatic ard aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons and/or chlorocarbons, and esp. vinyl chloride.
