Abstract

A product, which may be transformed into a foam, consists of a soln. of a polymer material in which is dispersed microspheres (Ms) at 0-25-45% by wt. of the polymer. The MS are insoluble in the solvent but are pref. coated with a cpd. which softens the surface, partic an aliphatic alcohol, pref. n-butanol. If the MS are soluble in the solvent, they are first coated with a material which is insoluble, partic polyester; polyamides; alkyd, acrylic, epoxy, urea-formaldeyde or phenol-formaldehyde resin. The polymer is a coating or adhesive polymer. The solvent is chosen from water, alkanes, aromatics or aliphatic alcohols. The MS are dispersed in a soln. of the polymer, and the dispersion is applied to a substrate dried and heated to make the MS expand. Used as electrical thermal or sound insulation, for metal furmsfing, car doors and panels, heating and cooling conduits and packaging.
