Abstract

A circuit arrangement for the resistance heating of high temperature furnaces, which comprise a temperature regulated central zone and two end zones, is as followed: two approximately equal resistors are provided for each of the end zones, each being connected in series to its respective voltage source. The supply for heating the principal zone is introduced through the centre of the voltage sources for the end zones, the resistance heater for the principal zone being connected to the centre of each resistance system, i.e., between each pair of resistors, of the other two zones; the phase of the voltage sources for the end zones is approx. 90 degrees displaced from the phase of the voltage source for the principal zone. In a preferred furnace arrangement, the heating unit is a graphite tube; the end portions are slotted axially to divide this tube into the two resistors in each end zone. Advantages achieved are reduced losses from heavy conductors and improved temperature distribution and control.
