Abstract

Process for redn. of lumps of Fe minerals comprises charging the bumps mixed with lumps of coal into an 'ERIM' furnace, ie. a furnace in which heat is supplied because part of the gases circulating in the furnace is burnt by air or O2 introduced in a suitable manner so that the furnace atmos. remains reductive. Part of the gases from the top of the furnace are recycled to the base of the furnace after treatment to eliminate elements which oppose redn. of Fe minerals, partic. H2O and CO2. The recycled gases are only those recovered at the top of the furnace which result from distillation of coal and without using reformed gases produced outside the furnace.
