Abstract
Secondary cooling of round metal strands or ingots in the continuous casting of metals is effected over the entire side surface of the strand by an appts. incorporating cooled beams to hold the ingot casting and with nozzles to spray the casting(s) with coolant. The beams and the nozzles are combined into >=2 pairs of sections, each with the beams and nozzles distributed uniformly about the circumference and mounted on a thrust bearing and connected to its movable ring. At the same time the section can rotate about the vertical axis together with the other sections in opposite senses and is offsettable at an angle corresponding to the distance between the beams. This effects uniform coolant flow over the whole area of the moving casting to effect uniform cooling and facilitate quicker casting.
