Abstract

A first slaughtering conveyor, of the endless type, comprises a horizontal chassis which forms a roller track for trains of pulleys. Hooks are suspended from these pulleys and are driven continuously by a chain and a motor. Each living animal is suspended from one of the hooks, with its head downwards, and is immediately bled. The animal being bled is moved at a speed determined by the time required for it to die. Each dead animal is then unhooked and placed on a horizontal conveyor where it undergoes certain preparatory phases prior to the skinning process proper. This is effected on another conveyor with similar hooks. Each dead animal is suspended from one of the hooks and skinned to shoulder level. The skin is rolled back over the head and hangs downwards; it is then gripped by a pince but the body of the animal continues to move so the skin is pulled off and completely removed. The last phase of the skinning operation, which is the most ardous, is thus effected mechanically without any great effort on the part of the operator. The considerable saving in man-power results in an increased yield.
