Abstract
Alkyl substd. maleic anhydride (esp. citraconic anhydride and dimethylmaleic anhydride) are made by catalytic oxidn. of alkenes substd. by >=1 alkyl gps. (esp. methyl gps.) at 250-500 degrees C. in the pres. of O2 or O2-contng. gases using a catalyst comprising a cpd. of V and a cpd. of a gp. VI metal such as Cr, Mo, W or U mounted in a thin film on a carrier. Prefd. catalysts comprise 5-50 wt.% V2O5, 5-50 wt.% MoO3, 0.2-10 wt.% P2O5 (promoter) and 10-90 wt.% TiO2, mounted on a low porous material such as metals, alloys, porcelain, quartz, etc. The oxidn. is pref. conducted at 350-450 degrees C. using a mixture of the alkenes (opt. mixed with other hydrocarbons) and air in a vol. ratio of about 1 : 99, using a contact time of 0.5-5 sec. Process gives high conversion of hydrocarbon and yields of the named anhydrides.
