Abstract
1391313 Phthalic anhydride NIPPON SHOKUBAI KAGAKU KOGYO CO Ltd 30 Oct 1972 46722/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Phthalic anhydride is prepared by the vapour phase oxidation of either ortho-xylene or naphthalene with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising an active composition containing TiO 2 , V 2 0 5 , Nb 2 O 5 , P 2 O 5 and K 2 0 and/or C5 2 0 in specified proportions supported on a silicon-carbide containing carrier, wherein the active composition and carrier have defined porosity or pore diameter characteristics respectively (see Division Bl). The oxidation conditions are: (i) for o-xylene feed 330-420‹ C., a xylene concentration of 15 to 40 l. air/ xylene and a space velocity of 2000-8000 hr.-<SP>1</SP>, and (ii) for naphthalene feed 380-440‹ C., a naphthalene concentration of 20 to 40 1. air/g. naphthalene and a space velocity of 2000-6000 hr.-<SP>1</SP>.
