Abstract

Bactericides, deodorants etc. are disseminated into the atmos. from soln. in an org. solvent, e.g. ethanol, which is subjected to catalytic combustion by contact e.g. with Pt or Pd catalyst, the combustion occurs in the vapour phase, because a gap is introduced between the wick which draws liq. from a reservoir (which may be packed with fibre e.g. cotton) and the burner. The burner is pref. of silica fibre, impervious to the liq. and the gap may be an air gap, or may comprise a region of the burner which does not support catalyst. The device does not require pre-ignition, and is thus safer than known types. The outlet may be capped after use, and the device re-used without refilling, wick is not frayed by continual withdrawal, and is not singed by contact with burner.
