Catalytic combustion device comprising a flask (1) containing a combustible liquid (2) a wick (4) plunging into the liquid and a burner (3) made from a porous material impregnated with a catalyst and to which the wick (4) is fixed, characterized in that the burner (3) comprises, at its lower part, an axial cavity (7) in which the wick (4) is engaged and, at its upper part, an annular cavity (6) whose outwardly turned wall (3a) has received the catalyst.

Description

Catalytic combustion burners are known which are mounted on a wick intended to be immersed in alcohol or other combustible liquid. By capillary action, the liquid rises in the wick and reaches the burner which, when it has been preheated, ensures its catalytic combustion.

In catalytic combustion burners hitherto produced, it often happens that the wick chars and clogs.

The present invention relates to a catalytic combustion burner which is improved so as to avoid these drawbacks and also offers the advantage of combining the catalytic combustion of the product to be diffused with an evaporation of this same product, the proportions of liquid burnt catalysis and diffused by evaporation being determined by construction.

The burner according to the invention is made of porous material and is characterized in that it comprises, at its lower part, an axial cavity in which can be engaged the wick intended to bring the fuel to the burner and, at its upper part, an annular cavity whose wall faces outwards received a catalyst.

Under these conditions, catalytic combustion occurs at a certain distance from the end of the wick; there is therefore no risk of it charring.

  • La Figure 1 est une vue en coupe verticale de l'appareil;
A catalytic combustion device has been described below, by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the appended drawing in which:
  • Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the apparatus;
  • Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of its burner, on a larger scale.

In Figure 1, we see a bottle 1 containing a combustible liquid 2. In the frustoconical neck 1 a of the bottle 1 is engaged a burner 3, to which is fixed a wick 4 immersed in the liquid 2, the neck of the bottle and the burner can be covered by a cover 5. The wick 4 is made of a very flexible textile material, which allows it to adapt to the depth of the bottle 1.

Le brûleur 3 comporte extérieurement une portée tronconique 8 destinée à reposer sur le goulot tronconique 1a du flacon 1.As can be seen in Figure 2, the burner 3, which is made of a porous material has at its upper part an annular cavity 6 opening to the outside and, at its lower part, an axial cavity 7 in which will be engaged the upper end of the wick 4. The burner 3 externally has a frustoconical surface 8 intended to rest on the frustoconical neck 1 a of the bottle 1.

The wall of the cavity 6 facing outwards has received, by impregnation, in the peripheral zone 3 a , a catalyst which will allow the catalytic combustion of the combustible product 2 contained in the bottle 1 and brought to the burner by the wick 4.

After preheating (approximately one minute of free combustion), the burner body having reached a sufficient temperature, the catalytic combustion will establish itself.

There will also occur an evaporation of the liquid (without combustion) from the central zone 3b which has not received a catalyst and will be heated by conduction. There will also be an evaporation of the liquid in zone 3 c which is below zone 3 a , but above the frusto-conical surface 8.

It is clear that by varying, by construction, the relative importance of the zones of catalysis 3 a and of evaporation 3 b and 3 c , according to the results sought, a variable proportion of catalyzed and evaporated product will also be obtained. The end of the wick 4 is in contact with the zone 3 b which is only heated by conduction and is therefore at a relatively low temperature; this end cannot therefore char.
