Abstract

Plastic chips (e.g. PTFE) are moulded or extruded under heat and pressure and the chips are heated by ultrasonic vibration. Either a tube vibrating perpendicularly to its moulding surface may be used provide ultrasonic vibrations in the chips. Because of the low thermal conductivity of the plastic the method provides more efficient use of energy required for heating than conventional methods.
