Abstract

A horizontal evaporator with an intermittently increasing cross-section for the flow path is used. The fluid is sprayed into the ducts and progressively evaporates, thus necessitating the increasing cross section. At the end of each stage of the evaporator, further liquid refrigerant is sprayed in from the sump in the separator upstream of the first stage. The flow of this sprayed in fluid is pref. produced by the pressure drop without mechanical pumping. The vapour from the last stage is superheated and removed for use. The spraying is used to maintain the vapour/liquid ratio at 0.5-1.0 (0.6-0.8) in all stages.
