Abstract
<PICT:0496193/III/1> In the crystallization and/or vacuum evaporation of liquids, e.g. saline solutions, in stages with the aid of air introduced as a stirring medium, the air is admitted into the successive stages under a pressure which is decreased as the degree of vacuum is increased in the successive stages. The same quantity of air is preferably used in each stage, e.g. about 20-80 cubic metres per stage. An evaporator 1 is divided by partitions 2, 3, 4 into four stages into which air is injected by valved pipes 30-33. Air and vapours are taken off through lines 7 to a common condenser 8 and in the stages of higher vacuum the gases are compressed by steam injectors 9-11. Cooling water is injected into the condenser 8 by a pipe 12 and the gases are removed by a steam injector 13 to a condenser 14 where the steam is condensed and from which air is evacuated and returned to the cycle by a pump 15. The temperature of the solution in the different stages is for example 25, 15, 8, and 2 DEG C.
