Abstract
Process for decarburising chrome steels esp. stainless steels by blowing the melt with diluted carbon monoxide from tuyeres having double or triple feed. The triple feed comprises an oxidising stream at the centre, a dilutant fed around it and a carbon bearing fluid at the periphery. In the double feed the oxidant and the dilutant are combined. The oxidising stream is industrially pure O2 or a gas contg. O2. The diluent is a neutral gas, argon, steam, etc. The carbon contg. fluid is fuel oil or a mixt of fuel oil/argon/steam. The fuel oil/oxygen wt. ratio is 1-10% but pref. 2.5-4%. The steel may be vacuum decarburised or decarburised under reduced pressure. By means of separate feeds the CO dilution can be controlled as well as the wear on the tuyeres by controlling the carbon contg. fluid flow.
