Abstract

Prodn. of alcohol from fermentable material, esp. beetroot, comprises comminuting the material, opt. with added water, to give a thick paste, fermenting, the evapg. under reduced press. at about 50 degrees C to separate (a) solid residue useful as cattle fodder, and (b) an alcohol-water mixt. which is fractionated into alcohol prod. and a water stream sufficiently pure for use as make-up for the next batch or for discharge. Process is continuous and does not produce any polluting by-prods.
