Abstract

Polyvinyl alcohol prepared by saponification is purified by washing with methanol, separating the solid from the liquid without drying and dissolving the solid in water, the remaining methanol being distilled off from the resulting solution by fractionation. The polyvinyl alcohol may be crushed prior to washing, the liquid may be separated by means of a screw press and the methanol expelling tower may be any of well-known types of distillation tower. An apparatus for carrying out the process continuously is described and illustrated.
