Abstract

Selective chlorination of dichlorethane-1,2 to trichlorethane-1, 1, 2 is obtd. by reacting a mixt. contg. dichlorethane-1, 2 and Cl2, using as starting material, the fraction of residues from the cracking of dichlorethane-1, 2 to give vinyl chloride, which contain is not >50% of dichlorethane-1, 2. The reaction is carried out at 50 degrees-150 degrees C, pref. 80 degrees-120 degrees C. The transformation rate is 75%, pref. ca 50%, of the dichlorethane introduced, and the reaction is carried out so that the trichlorethane-1, 1,2 obtd. escapes from the reaction media in gaseous form, after which the mixture obtd. is fractionated, the dichlorethane and lighter fractions being recycled into the chlorination reaction. The trichlorethane may be dehydrochlorinated to vinylidene chloride for use in polymers.
