Abstract

Oxidn. of NH3 to NO for prodn. of HNO3 using a porous catalyst complex linked by ceramic type bonds to a refractory support of MgO, SiO2 or ZrO2; the active material is a metal of the Pt gp. Oxides of Bi and/or Mo are incorporated in the complex, and also included is iron oxide, partic. Fe2O3. These promoters are introduced into the catalyst complex as 9-80%, pref. 9-65% Fe2O3, 4-20%, pref. 12% Bi2O3 and 4-20%, pref. 16% Mo oxide, while the Pt content is 0 1-10%. The catalyst constituents are mixed, compressed and sintered at >=1300 degrees C. The catalyst may be used in fixed or fluidized beds.
