Abstract
1359419 Boots &c A DASSLER 28 Jan 1972 [29 Jan 1971] 4195/72 Heading A3B [Also in Division B5] A shoe upper is provided with a lining in the heel zone by subjecting an integral web of material comprising a first layer of weldable foam material for contact with the shoe upper and a second denser layer of weldable material overlying the first layer, to a pressing and heating treatment over an area of the first layer to fuse the foam and increase the density of this area to form a marginal portion while leaving a portion of the first layer untouched to form a cushion and connecting at least a portion of the marginal portion to a shoe upper. The weldable layers of the integral web of material may be of PVC the first layer preferably being of closed pore foam and the second layer preferably being non-porous. The web may be produced by heating a foaming material in a mould to provide the first layer, the second layer being formed by fusing at the wall of the mould. The web of material may be provided with an elastically extensible layer, e.g. of tricot, on the surface remote from the second layer. The pressing and heating may be effected by a combined punching and welding tool which simultaneously punches the lining from the web. In the construction of the shoe upper the fused dense area of the lining is connected to the upper, this area preferably being connected to the exterior of the upper near the top edge of the heel zone thereof and the lining folded inwardly so that the cushion lies within the heel area of the upper.
