Abstract

Cellulose pulp is bleached by (a) treatment in aq. suspension with Cl2 or ClO2 to solubilise the non-cellulose materials and (b) treatment with 0.5-3.0% hypochlorite (dry pulp basis) for 15-180 min. at ca. 24-71 degrees C and pH 7-9, corresp. to 3-15 wt.% hypochlorination. The waste liquor contains 50-90% less colouring matter than when alkaline extraction of the solubilised non-cellulose materials is employed. During hypochlorination the pH is kept at pref. 7.5-8.5 esp. 7.8-8.2 pref. using 0.5-1% Na silicate as buffer. This treatment pref. is carried out for 30-90 min. at 38-71 degrees C.
