Abstract

High mol.wt. polycarbonates of second order transition temp. >=180 degrees C contain >=30 bifunctional gps where R1,R2,R3 are CH3, C2H5, CH(CH3)2, X is a bond, 1-5C alkylene or alkylidene, 5-15C cycloalkylene or cycloalkylidene, ether or keto link, n is 0 or 1 and when n is 0, X is linked to benzene gps. para to the carbonate and R3 is absent, and when n is 1, X is propylidene-2,2 and R1 is absent if the bond between X and aromatic gps. is ortho to the carbonate gps. whereas R3 is absent if X is para to the carbonate gps. The polycarbonates are prepd. by reaction of appropriate bisphenols (eg. bischlorocarbonic ester of 3,3-bis(3-5-dimethyl 4-hydroxyphenyl) propane) with 10-200 moles % of a t-amines for 6 min-5 h. Products for use in mouldings, fibres, films and coatings show improved resistance to alkali, hydrolysis and aminolysis.
