Abstract
1409614 Preparing polycarbonates GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 Sept 1973 44802/73 Heading C3R A process for preparing a polycarbonate comprises adding at least 70 weight per cent of the stoichiometric quantity of a carbonate precursor to a dihydric phenol in an aqueous medium, a catalyst, a molecular weight regulator and a solvent for the polycarbonate being present, while simultaneously adding to the reaction medium sufficient alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide to maintain a pH of 6 to 10, then adding sufficient of the hydroxide to mix the pH to at least 11 and maintaining a pH of at least 11 while reacting any remaining amount of the. carbonate precursor. Bisphenol A and phosgene are used in the examples with p-tertbutylphenol, triethylamine and methylene chloride.
