1,163,816. Aromatic polycarbonates, polyesters and poly(sulphone-ethers). GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 8 March, 1967 [9 March, 1966], No. 10914/67. Heading C3R. In the manufacture of aromatic polycarbonates, polyesters and poly(sulphone-ethers) from dihydric phenols, products which are fireproof and of controlled molecular weight are obtained by effecting the reaction in the presence of a monohydric phenol having 2, 3, 4 or 5 halogen substituents or a salt of such a phenol and an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or magnesium. The polycarbonates are derived by reacting a dihydric phenol with a carbonyl halide or a bishalo-formate and in the examples are derived from bisphenol A and phosgene. The polyesters are derived by reacting a dihydric phenol with an acid halide of a dicarboxylic acid (e.g. isophthalic or terephthalic acid). The poly(sulphone-ethers) are derived by reacting a dialkali metal salt of a dihydric phenol and a dihalogenated diaryl sulphone.
