Abstract

Fe sponge of low C-content, e.g. 0.02-0.04 wt % suitable for refined Fe is produced by (a) blowing heated gases of oxidation (combustion products) through Fe ore (e.g. opt. concd. ore or pellets); (b) reducing material with C-contg gas (e.g. steam-converted natural gas or synthesis gas) to 60-80% degrees of metallising and (c) finally reducing with heated H2 followed by cooling with cold H2. Pref. reducing gas is alternately blown downwards and upwards through material.
