Abstract

Reduction of magnetic anisotropy in single crystals of spinels (Me2+Fe2O4 where Me2+ = Ni, Co or Mn), orthoferrites (Me3+FeO3 where Me2+ = Ba or Pb) by incorporation of a small amount of iodine (up to 5 atoms per formula group) either by diffusion into previously grown crystals or by incorporation of iodine during growth from fluxed melts. The diffusion is carried out at 500 - 1000 degrees C in 1 - 8 atm. (pref. 3 atm.) I2 in a sealed quartz tube, the synthesis in pref. 8 atm. I2 in a sealed Pt crucible at 1300 degrees C reducing to 1000 degrees C. Reduction in magnetic anisotropy is obtained without deleterious effect on Curie temperature, saturation moment or g factor. The crystals are used for high frequency filters, radar, telecommunications etc.
