Abstract

PROCESS FOR PREPARING Na2SO4. M6A. by a process interlinked with processes for making fertilisers including magnesium ammonium phosphate, NaNO3, KNO3, CaHPO4. The Na2SO4 is used in the glass industry. It is cheap because both anion and cation are obtained as by-products of fertiliser processes. Interdependent processes used for H2SO4 free. Process are:- (i) Ca3(PO4)2 +3Na2SO4 right arrow 3CaSO4 +2NaH2PO4 + 4NaNO3. (CaSO4 is filtered off). (ii) 4NaNO3 + 2NaH2PO4 + CaO right arrow 4NaNO3 + CaHPO4 + Na2HPO4+H2O(CaHPO4 is filtered off). (iii) CaO. MgO + Na2SO4 + 4HNO3 right arrow CaSO4 + Mg(NO3)2 + 2 NaNO3 + 2H2O (CaSO4 is filtered off). (iv) Mg(NO3)2 + Na2HPO4 + NH3 + 6H2O right arrow MgNH4PO4.6H2O + 2NaNO3. The phosphate from iv is filtered off and the solution of NaNO3 is concentrated in a multistage evaporator. Crystals of NaNO3 are sold as fertiliser.
