Abstract

Monitoring the dissolving of spent nuclear fuels, (e.g. U-Al and Pu-Al alloys) comprises continuous removal of a proportion of the evolved gases and following the change in radioactive content (esp. Kr85) using an ionisation chamber. End:point is indicated when radioactive gas is no longer detected. To shorten time-lag between evolution and measurement O2 may be injected as a fluid Kr carrier.
