Abstract
An evaporator grid in a horizontal air-flow cooler is defrosted by (1) switching off air flow and refrigerant; (2) coating the evaporator grid with a liquid agent which reduces the freezingpoint, e.g. a mixture of glycol and water; (3) restoring the refrigerant supply to evaporator to freeze a coating of the liquid agent on the grid, and (4) switching on the air flow. There is no danger of entraining the liquid agent in the air flow- this is vital in the case of foodstuffs and has previously entailed an eliminator which is very difficult to arrange in horizontal air flow.
