Abstract

The heat pump takes heat from atmospheric air through the evaporator (3) which is finned to augment its effective surface. At low temperatures and high humidity conditions the evaporator freezes over and becomes inefficient. Hence an auxiliary evaporator (10) is placed in series with the other in order to preheat the air passing over it. This disposes of the freezing conditions over the fins of the main evaporator. The auxiliary evaporator is only brought into use when necessary and thaws out of its own accord when not in use. The efficiency of the heat pump is maintained under all conditions.
