Abstract

Steel articles are heat-treated in a furnace for a predetermined time, at most up to exchange equilibrium dependent on the temp., in an atmosphere containing carbon compounds. Within the furnace is a diffusion-permeable partition of the same material as the articles being treated which is passed a cetain quantity of gas containing no carbon. The carbon content of this gas beyond the furnace is directly or indirectly measured and the admission of carbon compounds to the furnace atmosphere is regulated accordingly. Specifically the additives may be hydrocarbons and the sensor gas N2, H2 and H2O, the amount of CO2 resulting from total combustion being the control parameter.
