Abstract

A plastic sheet elastic in two dimensions formed from a woven support covered by a thermoplastic layer and designed to fit the inner wall of the mould exactly, is applied to this wall by reduced pressure prior to the injection of the material to be foamed and is provided with a decorative design on its visible surfaces. The thermoplastic material impregnates the woven fabric so that the constituent yarns are adhered to the thermoplastic layer on one side and project on the other side. Alternatively the plastic sheet may have a decorative design on the visible face and on the interior invisible face may be treated mechanically, physically, or chemically to cause it to bond directly to the polyurethane foam. The mouldin g proper is then carried out by injection the material to be foamed, closing the mould while maintaining it under reduced pressure so that the thermoplastic sheet accurately fits the inner walls of the mould, and until the foamed material has reached its dimensionally stable state and is no longer deformed. The product is foamed plastic moulding bonded to a sheet sufficiently elastic to permit it to undergo the shape changes to which it will be subjected during use.
