Abstract

A layer of thermoplastic material is melted on a hot metal tool and then cooled when in contact with a leather surface. The thermoplastic layer may be a prefabricated film or an electrostatically sprayed coating. Pref. the leather is supported on a flexible plastic (polyether) foam mattress and the thermoplastic coating is applied to the flesh face of the hide. The transfer tool may have a textured surface. Process is used for making leather waterproofed or reinforced by thermoplastic (PVC) linings 0.1-1 mm thick. By maintaining the bulk of the leather below the m. pt. of the plastic, the leather retains most of its strength enabling it to resist handling and tearing during lamination.
