Abstract
Steel immediately after the hot forming treatment is subjected to a faster cooling schedule than conventionally, by cooling to a temp. 10-40 degrees C above the Au point and maintained at this temp for 5-20 mins (cooling rate used of 5-25 degrees C/sec). It is then quenched to below the martensitic transformation temp., followed by a conventional annealing process. Spec. during the final hot rolling the final temp. tE is kept so that tE plus-or-minus 15 degrees C is in the range 880-950 degrees C, with selective heating or cooling of regions of the material outside these limits. Steel of improved mechanical characteristics is obtained with significant reduction in treatment times.
