Abstract

The esters of formula CH2-C(R)-COO-A-COO-R1 are prepd. by thermal reaction of halo substd. carboxylic acid alkyl esters of formula X-A-COO-R1 with the salt of an alpha, beta-unsatd acid of formula CH2=C(R)-COOH in the presence of catalysts such as amines or quaternary ammonium salts with a total carbon atom content of 3-24. R is H or CH3-, R1 is C1-C6 alkyl, A is a divalent C1-C6 hydrocarbon gp. X is a halogen atom and M is Na or K. The process is esp. useful for production of methacrylate esters.
