Abstract

1-(Benzo b 3-thienyl methyl) guanidine (I) and its salts have antihypertensive activity. Cpd. (I) may be prepd. by reaction of benzo b 3-thienyl methylamine (II) with S-methyl isothiourea sulphate (III), followed by conversion to the base and preparation of a salt if required. In an example 38.9g (II) and 33.2g (III) were refluxed together for 6 hours in 200ml 50% ethanol, purified by treatment with methanol and acetone and recrystallised from water to give 20.4g (I) sulphate, m.pt. 237-238 degrees C.
