Abstract

Catalyst for cracking natural gas (and heavier hydrocarbon) with simultaneous conversion of CO to CO2 comprises (as active components) nickel and gamma-alumina (contng. 3-50 esp. 7-20% Ni) promoted by calcium, strontium, barium or uranyl oxide, and a silicon carbide support. Al : Ni ratio is pref. greater than that in nickel spinel, and less than 10 : 1. Ratio of Al : promoter metal is pref. 1 : 0.01 - 2 (esp. 1 : 0.1 - 0.4). Pref. support has the compsn. at least 95% silicon carbide 1-5% silica, 0.1-2% alumina, and at most 1.5% calcium oxide, and has 40-60% accessible pores, less than 10% closed pores, and a specific surface of up to 0.1 m.2/g.
