Abstract
Halogenation is carried out in the presence of carbon at a temp. giving volatile metal halides. This is maintained by feeding material into the reaction zone, which reacts exothermally or endothermally with the carbon giving a removable, gaseous oxidation product. An exothermally reacting substance is used to maintain the temp. above the halide-forming point, an endothermally reacting substance to prevent the temp. from rising above this point. Spec. the exothermal substance is oxygen, the endothermal substance carbon dioxide, a high-melting metal oxide and/or oxyhalide. W, Nb, Ta, Ti, No, V, Re and Cr-containing basic products are used.
