Abstract

Magnesium is produced from a feed comprising magnesium oxide or a magnesium silicate, or a substance containing magnesium oxide or silicate, e.g. dolomite or magnesite, by thermally reducing the feed, preferably first calcined or preheated, at a temperature of between 1000 and 1300 DEG C. with calcium vapour evolved by the decomposition of calcium carbide, e.g. at 1600-2000 DEG C., in an electric arc furnace, the magnesium vapour obtained being condensed to liquid or solid in a condenser. The feed may contain or have added to it a substance, e.g. iron oxide, exothermically reacting with the calcium vapour to produce non-volatile or volatile reaction products which do not interfere with the magnesium reduction process. The calcium vapour may be conducted through a feed in lumpy form or over a feed in finely divided form. The reduction may be effected in a vacuum or in an inert gas stream carrying the calcium vapour. Pure graphite is separated from the decomposition of the calcium carbide.
