Abstract

The process comprises applying an aqs. phosphate (1.0 - 2.8% w/v) having a pH 2 - 8 so as to form a film containing 0.108 - 0.87 g phosphorus per m2 of surface and subsequently diffusing this into the steel strip surface by heat treatment at 600 - 800 degrees C in an inert reducing or decarburizing atmosphere for 2 - 24 hrs. (batch annealing) or 30 - 60 seconds (continuous annealing). Spec. the phosphate is a mixture of soluble phosphate salt, phosphoric acid and a non-ionic wetting agent, and is partic. Na4P2O7.
