Abstract
Preparation of alpha-omega -alkanedihydrazines of formula H2N-NH-(CH2)n-NH-NH2 (where n is 1-6) esp 1,2-ethane-dihydrazine, is by condensing an excess of hydrazine hydrate with an alpha, omega -dihaloalkane, opt. in presence of a solvent, neutralising the haloacid formed by addition of a base to the reaction mixture, distilling the reaction mixture at atmospheric or under reduced pressure (to remove the optional solvent, water, and excess hydrazine hydrate), and separating the haloacid salt of the alpha, omega -alkanedihydrazine and the base, pref. by extraction into a solvent. The process gives easier separation of the product and better yields than prior art processes.
